The Superior Hiking Trail is a non-motorized foot trail, routed principally along the ridge line overlooking the northwest shore (North Shore) of Lake Superior. The trail is characterized by ascents to ridge tops and cliffs, and descents to numerous river and creek valleys, crossed by trail bridges. The trail traverses a variety of terrain and habitat types, including: birch/aspen, pine, fir, and cedar woodlands; grassy clearings; and rocky outcrops. There are panoramic views of Lake Superior, the Sawtooth Mountains, and inland woodlands. The rivers and streams, draining into Lake Superior, showcase waterfalls, rapids, and deep gorges where the rushing water has cut through layers of ancient volcanic bedrock. Steep portions of the trail are accessed by log and stone stairways.
Accessible from numerous trailheads along Minnesota Hwy 61 or secondary roads.
