Difficulty: Intermediate
Elevation: 1025 ft
Miles: 30 miles
Desc: It was developed under the guidance of the Kansas Trails Council and is managed by the Corps of Engineers. Volunteers under the direction of the Kansas Trails Council provide all of the maintenance on the trail. This trail is 30 miles long and traverses much of the historic Old Military trail from Ft. Leavenworth to Ft. Riley (Kansas). This trail is unique in its historic value, but it also distinctive in its geologic and topographic aspects. The trail is located in the northeast part of Kansas, which is the western edge of the eastern hardwoods. The Perry Trail is comprised of rolling hills and oak-hickory forest as well as open, native grasslands that make it a one of a kind trail for the Midwest. The trail follows much of the shoreline of beautiful Perry Lake, a 11,200 surface flood control/recreation lake which draws approximately 1 million visitors a year. Numerous backpackers and day hikers utilize this trail throughout the year, as well as wildlife observers and history buffs. We have a trail brochure, which describes the trail in more detail. We are in the process of re-doing our brochure to include more of the history and cultural, geographic and geologic details of the trail this winter. We have a volunteer who has done much research on the rock walls and Old Military Trail history and he would be a great asset to your book. I would be happy to hook you up with him if our trail is considered for inclusion in your book.
